This is the report from Al's visit with his pediatrician last month. I came across it yesterday as I was cleaning off my desk. I just throw these things wherever they land--other moms probably design entire pages in the baby book around this kind of thing, but I suck at that. Anyway, the nurse measured his height while he lay (is it lay? lie? ugh--how 'bout sprawled) down on the exam table paper--she made a quick mark at his head, a quick mark at his foot with his leg extended, she measured the distance between the two marks, and that was that.I'm pretty sure he must have pointed his toe or something because...
...this is the measurement that we took at home a month later. We stood him up to measure first, and then we tried it with him lying down. The measurements were within an eighth of an inch of each other. Surely he didn't shrink during that month. Of course he didn't. We just must be using different methods of measuring.Who knew it would be so complicated?
But really, that's not the problem here (if, in fact you want to say that there is even a problem).
Here's the "problem."
I just noticed this on the side of Al's infant carseat:

For today? We'll go with the home measurement. And tomorrow? We'll go shopping.
And yes, I realize that for a whole month, I had recorded data that indicated that the boy is too big for the carseat/carrier, yet it just didn't register. Because I am the sharpest pencil in the cup.

You are not a dumbass (in relation to yesterday's post) - at least you have printed photos of Al. I have over 3500 of Bumper (seriously) but I've had 10 printed. No sh*t. You have seen more pictures of Bumper then my friends and coworkers. Seriously.
moving on...
I'm guilty of the exact same thing. Bumper weighs approximately 16 lbs BUT is 27 inches tall (don't make me feel guilty about having a baby in the 10th percentile - DON'T - I already give myself enough crap about it) and we have the same sticker on our seat. Now we don't drive often but still... I'm sure it will be okay for a bit longer.... I hope... at least until this weekend, when I'll have a car and can go big box shopping. SIGH. At least you can find your doctor's notes...
From what I've been told, it's the weight range that is more important. The height ranges is more of a comfort thing.
And forgetting a bag? Nothing to be embarassed about. I forget more then that on a regular basis!!
MB--Al is not very high on the percentiles for weight, either, but I try really, REALLY hard not to pay attention to that. As long as he's growing and healthy, I'm happy. Percentiles, per-schmentiles.
Naomi, that makes perfect sense about the weight/height issue. He's strapped snuggly into the seat, but his feet reach far enough that he can rest them on the backseat (ha-that should have been another clue that he was beginning to outgrow it). He's not anywhere near the weight limit and seems pretty comfy, but I'm still a little paranoid about it. We'll see...
OK, um, I have been walking around for weeks asking other parents randomly about when a baby is too tall for their car seat (cuz WB hangs over the edge) AND IT'S NOTED ON THE SIDE?!?!
Am ultimate bad mother.
All three of my babes have out "lengthed" the car seat by six months... up here in Canada I have had the delightful experience of having the "_____'s feet are hanging over the edge!" with many a person. I was informed (thank you hunky emergency personel who has had car seat safety training) that the height is a nice comfort zone. Alas it is when the head gets to be more than 30% above the back that one MUST GO BOX STORE SHOPPING! So if the head is over the top by more than 30%, not so good. Minor flogging for bad parenting ;-). The feet, once mine can make the car seat emulate the exersaucer/jolly jumper (boing, boing, boing...) I start to count on having to move on.
Yuppers... thank goodness oldest child is into the whole "booster" thing, much cheaper, now to do the shuffle of car seats!
pssst... haven't even finished #1's baby book... #3 doesn't even have one yet! eep, you dare to think bad parent! HA!
Yeah, from what I understand everything the previous mommies said is true. Baby E's feet hang over and hubby has commented about that for quite some time.
E is 10 months and was only 16.9 lbs last month at the pedi. So don't talk to me about percentile-per-schmentile! We went through a whole thing with our doctor at 6 months....and she was worried for a while until she looked at mommy and daddy and realized that neither one of us is taller than 5'6".
HBM--see? I knew we were soul-sisters!
Fear & Love: It's official. Now that hunky emergency personnel dude has reaffirmed the fact that height guidelines are for comfort, I will delay the shopping trip (DELAY a shopping trip? You heard it hear first, y'all).
Soleclaw: My SIL's pedi told her the same thing after she was worried about my nephew consistently landing in the lower percentiles--if mom and dad are small or thin and lanky (like BIL & SIL) you just can't expect their kid to be a big ol' chart-topper. Personally, I think too many ppl put way too much stock in those percentile numbers. But that's just me...
